Hazelnut Caramel Brownies

These caramel-filled brownies topped with hazelnuts create the perfect desert for any meal!


1½ cups flour, all-purpose

¾ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1⅓ cups sugar

¾ cup butter or margarine, melted

2 eggs, beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla


Caramel filling

1 package (14 ounces) caramels, unwrapped

2 tablespoons milk

½ cup hazelnuts, toasted, skin removed, chopped


Chocolate frosting

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

¼ cup hazelnuts, toasted, skin removed, chopped


  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  2. Mix flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt in medium bowl; set aside.
  3. Blend sugar and melted butter or margarine in medium bowl.  Add eggs and vanilla; stir until blended.  Add cocoa mixture, ½ cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.  Spread half brownie batter (1½ cups) into greased, foil-lined 8-inch baking pan.
  4. Microwave caramels and milk on high in microwave-safe bowl for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until caramel is melted and smooth.  Immediately stir in ½ cup hazelnuts.  Spoon caramel mixture evenly over top of batter.  Spread remaining batter over caramel.
  5. Bake for 25 to 28 minutes.  Remove from oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips.  Let chips soften 5 minutes.  Spread melted chips over top of brownie.  Sprinkle with ¼ cup chopped hazelnuts.  Cool before cutting.
